mia: btw, i demand a blog post related to me and kaye at some point this summer
FINE.
Life in the city can be challenging. Some things (angry taxi drivers, constantly flashing lights, crowded subway cars, early morning construction) don’t exactly lend themselves to a relaxing lifestyle.
There is one thing about living in new york city, though, that never fails to make me happy: old friends always visit the big apple. They come for many different reasons - Restaurant Week, renewing passports and visas, summer internships, touring - and I try my best to catch them when they’re here. Being able to spend time with people I don’t get to see all the time is really a luxury. Few things make me happier.
Mia is one of those people. I met her five years ago at a summer camp, and we became fast friends (she’s one of the few people who actually liked my personality back then). We’ve done a great job of shooting insults at each other keeping in touch over the years. This summer, she’s working in NYC, and I meet with her (and her best friend Kaye) weekly now.
Kaye, a fellow NYU student, is a serious foodie. She’s a nutrition major, a graduate of bar-tending school, and an accomplished cook. Oh, and she knows all of the best hole-in-the-wall restaurants in NYC!
This IS a food blog, so here’s the food part. Here’s a dish that Kaye and I cooked together. (Mia was busy eating my nutella straight out of the jar…first with her finger, and then with a spoon. I’m out of nutella now.)

Roasted vegetable primavera with spicy italian sausage
This dish was simple, tasty, and seriously easy to make - perfect for a Thursday night dinner. Roast julienned vegetables with herbs (we used peppers, squash, carrots, and cherry tomatoes), brown sausage in a skillet, cook pasta, and combine everything with parmesan cheese.
Many things are changing. My brother graduated from NYU and is working full time. A bunch of close friends, including a particularly pesky next door neighbor, are going off to college soon.
And many things are exactly the same. Five years ago, it was really fun to poke Mia in the side (her reaction is pretty priceless). In 2010, it’s just as fun. Next time, though, I’ll prepare myself to get punched in the stomach and pushed off my bed.
Restaurant week is coming soon! I’ll definitely document my experiences here.
Have a great rest of the week!
