black forest cake from carnegie deli - the very last bite
I shared an insanely large slice of this cake with a very old friend last night. I enjoyed every bite of rum-soaked chocolate cake, cherry-laced cream, and pleasantly artificial maraschino. It brought me back to the Stork’s Pastry Shop in Whitestone (which I still argue is one of the best bakeries in New York), where I had black forest cake for the very first time and fell in love with it.
And eating that very last bite reminded me, as chocolate always has since I was a child, that things would always get better and the worst would eventually pass. New challenges call for old comforts, and though they may come at the expense of my waistline, they never fail.
